I Will Not Be A Bystander

Has the world truly gone mad?

Photos of gang rape go viral on Facebook

“A 16-year-old girl was drugged and raped repeatedly by partygoers at a weekend rave near Vancouver as onlookers snapped photos that have since found their way onto Facebook, the RCMP said Thursday.

The attack happened at a rave last Friday night on a rural property near Pitt Meadows, east of Vancouver. Police believe the girl was given a substance commonly know as the date-rape drug.

“It’s essentially one male having intercourse and when he’s done, another one participates – that’s a gang rape,” Insp. Derren Lench said in an interview.” -The Globe and Mail

Seton Hall Student Is Fatally Shot at a Party

“A Seton Hall University honors student was fatally wounded and four other people, including two fellow students, were injured early Saturday when a gunman walked into a house party about a mile from the campus and opened fire, the authorities said.”-New York Times

Texas: Gunfire at a University

“A student wearing a dark suit and a ski mask opened fire on Tuesday with an assault rifle on the University of Texas campus in Austin, before fleeing into a library and fatally shooting himself. The police escorted students to safety, right, and no one else was hurt.”-Associated Press/NYT

Private Moment Made Public, and a Fatal Jump

“It started with a Twitter message on Sept. 19: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”

That night, the authorities say, the Rutgers University student who sent the message used a camera hidden in his dormitory room to broadcast the roommate’s intimate encounter live on the Internet.

And three days later, the roommate who had been surreptitiously filmed — Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman and an accomplished violist — jumped from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River in an apparent suicide.”-The New York Times

My mind is buzzing with the unthinkable: “Is this the new normal? no…No…NO!”

NO—I refuse to become

DESENSITIZED

to the madness—

This just isn’t right…If we are to survive as a species, what can we do to ensure Social Sustainability from more than just an economic stand point?

The headlines above serve as examples, sadly there are many to choose from…atrocities are countless…bullying that pushes individuals so far that they take their own life, bullying that drives a parent to protect and in turn create legal trouble for them self, bullying that hospitalizes, shooting rampages, human sex-trafficking, domestic violence, rape, objectification and sexualization of girls and women, female genocide, arranged marriage, female genital mutilation, stalking, cyber stalking…

It is all absolutely unacceptable—we are living in a time where complacency is replacing action. And mean spirited acts of violence and bullying are superseding pure human decency.

Shouldn’t

we

be

OUTRAGED??!!

If I buy into the notion

that I can’t affect change…?

What becomes of the future?

I will not be a bystander…

I just can’t be.

What do you think ?

In my opinion, adults modeling self-respect/respect toward others and accepting personal responsibility for their actions are fundamental to educating and guiding youth to value themselves and to understand the moral imperative of valuing another human being.

  • I completely agree with you Rod. Also as I have thought about this more I believe we also need to encourage the media to bring forth stories about the good in the world too…thank for your response!
